Are you an organized professional with cooking experience, ready to make a difference in your own neighborhood?
You’re invited to volunteer as a kitchen leader!
We partner with local nonprofits and volunteer groups to serve people experiencing homelessness, in one-day events that we call "Resource Centers". These days bring together county services, access to housing case managers, and other service organizations in a warm, inclusive, and welcoming environment that includes music, art, and a freshly-cooked meal.
This meal is made by volunteers in the on-site kitchen of our facilities partner. In this role, you will lead a team of 5-10 volunteers to prepare and serve a warm meal. We have a menu that we've been making for several months of fully-customizable, vegetarian rice and bean bowls with a choice of many interesting and delicious toppings. We will train and support you to prepare this meal (and welcome your ideas and creativity too!)
Who - You’re a motivated, organized person with cooking experience who is excited to serve your neighbors and able to lead a team of volunteers.
Where - Most of your volunteer time will be spent on-site, preparing and serving the menu. There will be a few event preparation meetings on Zoom and at least one in-person meeting before and after the event.
What you’ll do:
- Must be comfortable leading, using, and being around kitchen tools ( i.e. knives, stove, oven)
- Share, lead, and use all safety guidelines and precautions when cooking
- Prepare vegetables and toppings for burrito bowl meals for 100 + diners
- Cook rice, beans, veggies, etc for 100+ people
- Assist with creating the grocery shopping list
- Welcome, instruct, and guide new volunteers on kitchen tasks
- Communicate questions, needs, and concerns to Better Angels' team leads
- Your first shift will be with a kitchen leader with the goal of training for subsequent days as a leader.
Tools - We will provide you with the cooking tools you need. However, if you want to bring your own apron you may.
Time Commitment: You’ll volunteer for 2-5 hours
Why this project matters: Together we are meeting urgent needs for neighbors experiencing homelessness. We will be able to have supportive and dedicated volunteers create a welcoming environment for all people. We are building community connections that will have a lasting impact for both housed and unhoused neighbors. And the work Better Angels' volunteers do to connect and care support our mission of ending the epidemic of homelessness
How: Use your leadership skills, kitchen preparation/ cooking experience, and communication skills in practical ways for this impactful project! You’ll get as much support as you need from our leaders and team.
