What will volunteers be doing?

We invite you to join us for an inspiring conversation on shelter and the impactful work of Better Angels, led by our Director of Shelter, Khady Camara.  In this meeting, you'll also learn how you can volunteer to improve shelter conditions and build stronger partnerships between shelter operators and the local community.

About Shelter Pillar Volunteering — a meaningful opportunity to be on the frontlines of change by visiting shelters, assessing site conditions, and fostering supportive relationships with shelter staff.

Play a key role in strengthening LA’s shelter network by:

• Visiting assigned shelter sites across Los Angeles

• Conducting structured walkthroughs using a provided checklist

• Collecting basic data on shelter amenities, accessibility, and nearby services

• Taking respectful, non-intrusive site photos (as permitted)

• Engaging with shelter staff to build trust and community connection

• Submitting a site report after each visit via the Better Angels database

• Flagging urgent needs or notable conditions to Better Angels leadership

Each visit typically lasts 1–1.5 hours and may be done solo or with a partner, depending on the shelter.

Why does joining this Meeting Matter?

Shelters are one of the most critical touchpoints for our unhoused neighbors. By collecting on-the-ground data and building rapport with staff, Shelter Pillar Volunteers:

• Help Better Angels assess shelter conditions citywide

• Support improvements to safety, accessibility, and livability

• Promote collaboration between service providers and community advocates

• Identify urgent needs to inform strategic action

Why are we doing this work?

Better Angels is committed to ending the epidemic of homelessness in Los Angeles County through four key pillars: Shelter, Employment, Outreach, and Housing. Volunteers, in just a few hours a month, will together support improving shelter conditions and strengthening the support systems that serve our unhoused neighbors.
