Do you enjoy high-impact work that responds to immediate needs?
Do you want to use your professional skills to support Veterans affected by the ongoing fires?
Better Angels has identified an immediate need for disabled veterans who were evacuated due to fire or heavy smoke. Some people who were recently sheltered are not willing to go back to a shelter (near fires) to retrigger their PTSD. A workspace has been set up in Venice to provide shelter, meals, internet, and resources to apply for benefits. Our skills are needed to help prepare and activate this space for veterans’ fire relief and ensure each has stable housing. Some examples of current needs are listed below. Other needs will be identified and shared as they arise.
Why this work matters:
This responsive work will support veterans who do not have the family or friend support they need to navigate and thrive during these intense times. Many are dealing with disabilities or a history/current stretch of homelessness. Your time and skills will support this non-profit in helping each one meet their needs and stay housed.
What you'll do:
This team-based project encompasses all of these roles. You will be matched to one or more roles depending on your skills and interests.
A. Personnel Skills/Qualifications Evaluations and Role Matching– 2-4 hours. The volunteer in this role needs to understand each team member's skillset and availability. And you’ll need to coordinate closely with the Non-profit leader to understand roles, and the project manager(s) to ensure staffing is completed. Work remotely or on-site
B. Project Management: Est 2-6 hours - As the Veterans shelter space is established to help with benefits applications, short-term housing needs, and other fire relief-related needs, task organization, volunteers, and matching skills to needs (with personnel evaluator) will increase efficiency and assure success. At least one volunteer is needed. Work remotely or on-site
C. Process Improvement: Est 2-4 hours - Many new workstreams to help with benefits application, medical, housing, etc were established quickly at the time of need. Helping review, streamline, and document the processes will improve the experience for veterans and volunteers.
Work on-site with some remote work. Several volunteers are needed.
D. Strategic Communication: Est 1-4 hours - Clear communication to the veterans about services, timelines, and processes is needed. Clear communication to organize the volunteers is also needed. Work remotely or on-site. Several volunteers are needed.
E. Technology: Est 3-6 hours - A Starlink terminal was donated and needs to be set up. There are other IT-related needs that our tech-savvy team could likely help set up in the new Veterans Support space. Work on-site. One to two volunteers are needed.
Note: This opportunity is designed for our Booz Allen Hamilton skilled volunteers. If you would also like to support this effort, please respond and we'll see how you can help too!
About our non-profit partner
The Global Women's Foundation and Band of Brothers (GWFBOB) organization is helping veterans suffering from homelessness, by supporting each into community, housing, and jobs. Its mission is to end veteran homelessness and provide holistic rehabilitation through community, wellness, and connection. Since 2021, GWFBOB has put over 40 veterans in homes. The Echo Bravo Project is at the heart of GWFBOB's work—a transformative initiative to create a Veterans Sanctuary on a 24-acre site in Simi Valley, California. This site, which has served as its primary retreat location since 2021, offers veterans a place to heal, grow, and thrive.
