At Better Angels, we’re on a mission to cure homelessness through compassion, connection, and action. Technology helps us extend our reach, improve our programs, and build tools that serve people in need.

As a Junior Developer, you’ll work alongside a welcoming team of experienced mentors, including our Tech Lead and Project Managers. You’ll gain real-world experience contributing to projects that support underserved communities, while learning best practices and building a portfolio you can be proud of.

Role Overview

As a Volunteer Junior Developer, you’ll help build and maintain internal tools, contribute to meaningful features, and participate in team sprints and code reviews. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to sharpen their skills while doing work that matters.

Whether you’re a recent bootcamp grad, a career switcher, or a college student, this is your chance to grow with purpose.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development Support: Write and test code under the guidance of the Tech Lead

  • Collaboration: Join team standups, learning sessions, and code reviews

  • Feature & Fixes: Contribute to feature development and bug resolution

  • Documentation: Track your work, ask thoughtful questions, and stay curious

Helpful Qualifications

  • Some experience with front-end or back-end web development

  • Eagerness to learn new tools, frameworks, and practices

  • Consistent and dependable—can contribute monthly to team efforts

  • Excited about using tech for good

About Better Angels

Better Angels is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending the homelessness crisis in LA County by building community and opportunity. We bring people together to solve problems through outreach, mentorship, and innovative tech that makes our work more effective and more human.

Time Commitment

Approximately 3-5 hours per month. Flexible and remote. We ask for a minimum 3-month commitment, with a hand-off to other volunteers before you exit.
