As Tech Lead, you’ll help us build systems that directly support our outreach, mentorship, and operations—tools that power stability for the people we serve. From guiding architecture decisions to mentoring junior developers, your leadership will ensure our digital products are effective, inclusive, and built to last.
Role Overview
As a Volunteer Tech Lead, you’ll oversee the development and direction of our internal tools and platforms. You’ll work alongside project managers, developers, and nonprofit staff to ensure we’re building thoughtfully and collaboratively—with our mission at the center.
This role is terrific for someone who blends technical excellence with people-first leadership and wants to use their skills for good.
Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership: Make key decisions on architecture, frameworks, and technical direction

Mentorship: Review code and support growth for junior and volunteer developers

Collaboration: Partner with project managers and program leads to align tech efforts with mission goals

Platform Oversight: Ensure our digital tools are secure, stable, and scalable
Helpful Qualifications

5+ years of experience in software engineering or web development

Experience mentoring or leading technical teams

Comfortable with GitHub, full-stack development tools, and agile environments

Passionate about equity, access, and community-driven tech
About Better Angels
Better Angels is a nonprofit organization committed to ending the homelessness epidemnic through strategic outreach, workforce programs, and community building. Our tech initiatives support our mission by helping key workers reach more people, coordinate efforts, and support more people moving into homes, faster.
Time Commitment
Approximately 3-5 hours per month. Fully remote and flexible. We ask for a minimum 3-month commitment and a hand-off to other volunteers before you leave.
