Volunteer: 7/13 Whittier Summer Celebration - Serve with us at our Resource Day

Do you enjoy working with positive people? Are you ready to make a difference in Whittier, serving our unhoused neighbors?

Our partners at the Whittier LGBTQ Center provide showers, laundry, case management, free clothing, and care to the community every Monday-Friday.  And every Thursday, our partner, Operation Healthy Hearts, provides groceries and hygiene supplies.
But there are more needs in this area, so we invite service providers and vendors to come alongside us to provide a warm, nutritious meal, immediate healthcare, connection to many other benefits and resources!

Together
: We'll be providing a warm meal, resources, and entertainment for our unhoused neighbors by partnering with local service vendors. Your presence and volunteering will help create a welcoming, supportive, and safer environment for our community.

Why this project matters: Our unhoused neighbors will get some urgent needs met and enjoy community, while connecting to resources.  When we work with fellow volunteers to meet the urgent needs of people living outside, our entire community benefits.

Wear: Please wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty. You may be working outside, so wear a jacket, hat, and/or sunscreen.   Wear closed-toe shoes, and leave your jewelry and any bags at home.   If you've volunteered with us before, feel free to wear your Better Angels T-shirt to show your support!

Tools: We will provide any necessary supplies and tools.

Age: All ages are welcome. Teams with members younger than 14 will serve with their parent/ guardian.

What We Will Do

This role places you at the front line of our events — welcoming guests, listening to their stories, and helping them take an important first step toward financial stability.

Role Overview

As a Resource Day Intake Specialist, you will conduct structured intake conversations with guests attending our Resource Days. Working in pairs, you will guide guests through a short questionnaire designed to determine potential eligibility for Social Security Disability benefits.

Every intake conversation represents a potential pathway toward greater security.

Conduct structured intake interviews using a standardized digital questionnaire

Accurately enter guest information into the intake form during the event

Work collaboratively with another volunteer as part of a two-person intake team

Meet monthly via Zoom with the volunteer team to share experiences and support each other.

Qualifications

Strong interpersonal skills and a friendly, approachable demeanor

Ability to listen carefully and communicate with empathy and respect

Ongoing support from experienced team members

Our goal is to ensure every volunteer feels confident and prepared.

Time Commitment

Volunteers will serve two to three Resource Days per month, with each event lasting approximately four hours onsite.   See the schedule of our events here.

Volunteer: Turn Your Marketing Leadership into Measurable Social Impact

Are you the person people trust to lead the plan and rally the team?Do you want your marketing skills to produce visible, human impact — every month?

We are recruiting up to eight Volunteer Outreach Marketing Leads to own an outreach strategy and execution for defined Los Angeles County areas.

Each Lead will direct a volunteer team in marketing to guests, volunteers, and community stakeholders, for one or more specific neighborhoods with recurring monthly Resource Days and community events.

This is a leadership role — not just participation.

Role Overview

As a Volunteer Outreach Marketing Lead, you will own outreach performance within your assigned geography. You’ll design a hyper-local engagement strategy, lead a team of volunteers, and ensure our Resource Days are visible, accessible, and well-attended.

You will work closely with the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator to recruit and engage your outreach team. You are not building from scratch — you are leading and mobilizing talent.

You will also work under the guidance of an experienced Director of Marketing, gaining hands-on leadership experience in field marketing, community growth strategy, and nonprofit scale.

This is a fun, fast-moving opportunity to collaborate with a highly capable team tackling the biggest issue facing Los Angeles County.

Why This Work Matters

Better Angels’ Resource Days provide housing navigation, essential supplies, and critical support for people experiencing homelessness, so they can meet their urgent needs and move through their journey into homes as quickly as possible.

Outreach determines impact.

When awareness increases:

More unhoused neighbors gain access to vital support and housing, and stabilization services

More volunteers engage consistently

More donors and partners understand and support the mission

Each Outreach Marketing Lead strengthens Better Angels’ presence in their geography. With well-led, consistent monthly events, we expand access to services and deepen trust in communities that need it most.

Your leadership directly translates into more people served.

Key Responsibilities

Own outreach strategy and execution for one or more defined Los Angeles geographies

Develop neighborhood-specific engagement plans for monthly Resource Days and related events

Partner with the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator to recruit and activate your outreach team

Lead and manage volunteer outreach teams with clarity and accountability

Build relationships with neighborhood councils, local businesses, student groups, and community partners

Manage outreach timelines, materials distribution, and performance tracking

Report insights and outcomes to the Senior Operations Manager and Director of Marketing

Leadership & Portfolio Value

This role offers:

Direct mentorship from a seasoned Director of Marketing

Cross-functional collaboration with Operations leadership

Full ownership of a geographic growth strategy

Experience leading and managing skilled volunteers

Measurable performance metrics tied to real-world impact

For accomplished professionals, this is an opportunity to:

Demonstrate executive-level leadership outside your primary role

Build a tangible portfolio of community-based marketing impact

Program: Los Angeles County

Your primary “customer” for this project is the Senior Operations Manager, who oversees all logistics and leads for Resource Days. Your outreach success directly supports strong event turnout, volunteer engagement, and smooth on-the-ground execution.
