DONATION DRIVE LEADERS: BETTER ANGELS AND VALLEY OASIS PARTNERSHIP Inspire generosity and help collect essential donations for families and individuals in need. Join us as a Donation Drive Leader supporting our partnership between Better Angels and Valley Oasis in Lancaster. WHY THIS WORK MATTERS: Every donated item tells a story of kindness. At Better Angels, we believe that ending homelessness takes both systems of support and human connection. Through our partnership with Valley Oasis, we are hosting donation drives that directly serve survivors of domestic violence, families in transition, and unhoused community members across the Antelope Valley. As a Donation Drive Leader, you will help transform generosity into real change by organizing efforts that provide clothing, hygiene products, and household essentials that restore hope and dignity to those who need it most.

WHAT YOU WILL DO: As a Donation Drive Leader, you will work with the Better Angels Volunteer Engagement team to plan and lead donation efforts in your community. You will help recruit and inspire others to give, manage logistics, and ensure that donations are collected and delivered efficiently. You will plan and host drives at your workplace, school, church, or community group. You will collect and sort donated goods such as clothing, hygiene kits, and household items. You will communicate regularly with Better Angels Volunteer Engagement Specialist Tiffany Pegula and Valley Oasis staff to stay aligned. You will help coordinate drop off logistics or delivery to the Valley Oasis site in Lancaster and share photos and stories from your drive to inspire others. You will also help spread awareness about the initiative through your social media or local networks.

WHO YOU ARE: You do not need prior fundraising or nonprofit experience. This opportunity is for anyone with initiative, organization, and a heart for service. It is a great fit if you are reliable, motivated, and passionate about helping families rebuild their lives. You enjoy connecting people to purpose, are comfortable organizing logistics, and want to make a real difference in your community in a flexible and meaningful way.

WHAT YOU WILL GAIN: Your leadership will help hundreds of individuals and families receive essential items and a renewed sense of hope. TIME COMMITMENT: This opportunity is flexible and requires about five to eight hours each month depending on the size and scope of your donation drive.

LOCATION: This role is primarily remote with optional in person coordination and donation delivery at Valley Oasis in Lancaster California.

Together: We'll be providing a warm meal and resources to our unhoused neighbors by partnering with long-standing local service group, Pico Union Project. Your presence and volunteering will create a welcoming, supportive, and safer environment.

Why this project matters: Our unhoused neighbors will get some urgent needs met, which everyone deserves.  Our partner, the Pico Union Project regularly provides nutritional grocery items, local services ( Metro TAP cards, healthcare services, diapers, clothing, and more regularly to the vibrant Pico-Union community. W e will invite more local vendors for their guests to access at this location, set up showers, and use some of the grocery items to provide a freshly cooked meal. When we work with fellow volunteers to meet the urgent needs of people living outside, our entire community benefits.

What We Will Do

Our partners at the Whittier LGBTQ Center provide showers, laundry, case management, free clothing, and care to the community every Monday-Friday.  And every Thursday, our partner, Operation Healthy Hearts, provides groceries and hygiene supplies.   
But there are more needs in this area, so we invite service providers and vendors to come alongside us to provide a warm, nutritious meal, immediate healthcare, connection to many other benefits and resources!

Together: We'll be providing a warm meal, resources, and entertainment for our unhoused neighbors by partnering with local service vendors. Your presence and volunteering will help create a welcoming, supportive, and safer environment for our community.

Why this project matters: Our unhoused neighbors will get some urgent needs met and enjoy community, while connecting to resources.  When we work with fellow volunteers to meet the urgent needs of people living outside, our entire community benefits.

Support Food on Foot with Clothing Sorting in Bell CA Our partners at Food on Foot could really use a few extra hands this week. They are sorting a large clothing donation at the Shelter Partnership warehouse in Bell CA and are looking for volunteers who can help open boxes identify what is inside and label items for distribution. It is simple work that makes a big impact for our neighbors:)

Why this project matters:  A warm, homemade meal isn't just meeting an immediate need by satisfying hunger.   Making and then delivering a delicious and nutritious burrito with a bottle of water shows someone we care about and want to connect with and support.  When we work with fellow volunteers to meet the urgent needs of people living outside, our entire community benefits. 

Wear: Please wear comfortable clothes you can cook and then walk in.   If you've volunteered with us before, feel free to wear your Better Angels T-shirt to show your support!  Bring an apron if you like, and either a hat or a hairnet is appropriate for kitchen work.  Leave expensive jewelry, including rings at home.

With hundreds of volunteers around L.A., our team has a solid process and working system to attract and recruit volunteers. And, as we scale to end our crisis of homelessness, we need thousands more engaged volunteers. Our Volunteer Recruiters play a pivotal role in driving the mission of Better Angels forward by identifying, engaging, and recruiting dedicated individuals to support our efforts in combating homelessness. This role requires dynamic individuals who enjoy building relationships with other caring neighbors and are passionate about filling open roles. Our Volunteer Recruiters work closely with the Sr. Operations Manager to ensure that our volunteer base is diverse (in every dimension), enthusiastic, and aligned with our mission.

Recruitment Strategy Development:

Develop and implement recruitment strategies to attract volunteers from various backgrounds.

Identify and leverage different channels for volunteer recruitment, including social media, community events, and partnerships with local organizations.

Volunteer Recruitment:

Create compelling and accurate descriptions for volunteer roles and opportunities.

Screen and interview potential volunteers to ensure a good fit for each need.

Outreach and Engagement:

Conduct outreach activities to engage potential volunteers and raise awareness about the organization’s mission.

Attend community events, job fairs, and networking functions to represent Better Angels and promote volunteer opportunities.

Helpful Experience and Desired Skills

Experience in recruitment, community outreach, or a related field is preferred.

Every Wednesday, Kingdom Common Grounds at the First United Methodist Church of Reseda provides a hot sit-down meal in a beautifully decorated dining room, warm showers, a full (free) "farmer's market", shopping and styling in a full clothing boutique, free haircuts, free childcare, and children's books.  Partnering with Better Angels, we will invite more local resources for their guests to access at this location.  When we work with fellow volunteers to meet the urgent needs of people living outside, our entire community benefits.

Every week, Food on Foot serves hundreds of unhoused and low-income individuals in Hollywood — and it’s the kindness of donors that keeps this mission alive. Now we need helping hands to add a personal touch through handwritten envelopes.

This opportunity is simple but powerful. We’re looking for volunteers with good penmanship to help address envelopes for thank-you letters sent to our generous donors. Your role helps ensure each note feels warm, sincere, and personal, just like the work Food on Foot does every Sunday. It’s an easy way to contribute to a bigger cause, all from the comfort of your home or in a quiet group setting.

Hand-addressed envelopes go a long way in making people feel seen and appreciated. Our partners at Food on Foot believe that dignity, connection, and opportunity are essential ingredients for rebuilding a life. Many of our program participants are actively working toward stability, but what they often need is practical guidance, encouragement, and a pathway forward.

As a Volunteer Workshop Leader, you’ll lead a one-time or recurring session for unhoused or low-income individuals enrolled in Food on Foot’s Jobs & Housing Program. Whether you’re sharing professional experience, life skills, or creative tools, your contribution will equip someone with knowledge they can use to take their next step toward a job, a home, or a more confident future.

This is an opportunity to be a positive, empowering presence in someone’s journey—and to turn what you know into something that creates real impact.

Design and lead a practical, accessible workshop based on your life or work experience

Offer insights into topics like resume writing, job readiness, budgeting, time management, wellness, or other personal development skills

Collaborate with Food on Foot staff, who will support your preparation and provide guidance on structure and tone

Create a warm, encouraging space where participants feel seen, supported, and capable

Workshops are generally held in person on Sundays in Hollywood, and can be one-time or recurring depending on your availability and interest.

As a FRIEND mentor, you’ll be matched with someone in Food on Foot's Jobs & Housing Program who is working hard to build long-term stability in four key areas: Career, Housing, Finances, and Personal Growth. Many of our participants are already doing the hard work—they just need someone to walk beside them, celebrate the wins, and offer guidance when things get tough.

As a FRIEND, you’ll offer personalized encouragement, practical advice, and a consistent presence. You don’t need professional coaching experience—just compassion, reliability, and a willingness to show up.

You might:

Help with budgeting tips, building credit, or setting financial goals

Support job readiness through resume feedback, interview prep, or job search strategies

Offer insight or support with housing navigation or personal growth

Be a consistent, motivating voice as your mentee works toward key milestones

You’ll connect regularly—in person, by phone, or both—with support from the Food on Foot staff. You’ll also receive training and ongoing guidance to help you feel confident in the role.

Los Angeles County faces a deep homelessness crisis. More than 45,000 Angelenos are without homes​ as of 2024. Attorneys on our Legal Advisory Board can help protect vulnerable renters and shape fair housing policies, directly helping individuals avoid eviction and homelessness.

By volunteering your legal expertise, you support innovative solutions (like eviction-prevention loans and tech platforms) that provide a real safety net for people at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness. Your civic leadership and advocacy make a tangible difference: helping Better Angels navigate complex legal challenges means we can serve more people and bring them home.

Volunteer Advisors will provide strategic counsel and guidance for our mission-driven programs.

As a Legal Advisory Board member, you will work with our leadership team to tackle legal and policy issues related to housing and homelessness. Your experience in real estate law, tenant/landlord law, employment law, or nonprofit governance will help shape our strategies.

You’ll collaborate with city and nonprofit partners, Better Angels staff, and fellow volunteers. Together, you’ll integrate legal insight into program design, risk management, and advocacy efforts. This is a hands-on volunteer role where your expertise informs real cases and guides active initiatives.

*Attend and actively participate in one quarterly Legal Advisory Board meeting (typically 1–2 hours, held virtually or in Los Angeles) to review ongoing cases and organizational strategy.

*Provide up to ~3 hours per month of pro bono legal advice and consultation on specific cases, contracts, and policy questions. Recruit or refer qualified volunteers for direct legal support, including reviewing lease or loan documents, advising on tenant rights and eviction prevention, and guiding employment or nonprofit legal issues.

*Review program materials (e.g., eviction-prevention loan agreements, partnership contracts, policy briefs) for legal soundness and compliance. Offer recommendations to ensure our work is legally robust.

*Monitor relevant local, state, and federal laws/regulations affecting our programs. Alert staff to legal risks or changes and advise on proactive strategies to keep clients and operations safe.

*Collaborate closely with Better Angels staff and fellow board members. Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional ethics while contributing a solutions-oriented perspective to advance our mission.

*Licensed attorney in good standing in California ( preferably with several years of practice experience).

*Expertise in one or more of the following areas: real estate law, tenant and landlord law, employment law, or nonprofit/governance law. Experience advising REITs, nonprofits, or working on housing/homelessness issues is a strong plus.
*Demonstrated commitment to social justice, community advocacy, or public interest – for example, prior pro bono work or civic leadership roles. A passion for housing justice and helping underserved communities is essential.

*Excellent analytical and communication skills. You should be able to explain complex legal issues clearly to non-lawyers and work collaboratively with a diverse team.

*Comfort with a primarily remote volunteer role. Flexible scheduling skills and reliability are important, since community members and partners depend on our timely legal guidance.

*Ability to volunteer approximately 3–4 hours per month.

Better Angels is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit founded in 2023 by tech entrepreneurs to tackle the region’s homelessness crisis. Our mission is “to solve LA’s homelessness epidemic by harnessing the power of the entire Los Angeles community”​. We take a bold, holistic, technology-driven approach. In partnership with civic agencies and funders, we build programs and tools across prevention, services, shelter, and housing.

For example, our Short-Term Eviction Prevention (STEP) Fund provides rapid, zero-interest microloans to tenants facing financial emergencies. To date, more than 600 such loans (totaling more than $1.2M) have helped keep families in their homes​

Better Angels also develops digital tools to empower homeless outreach workers,  connect people in crisis with resources (like our recent disaster relief navigator for wildfire victims), or find shelter, and organizes community events to bring services directly to those experiencing homelessness. We collaborate closely with city officials and partner nonprofits to minimize duplication and maximize our impact.

*Volunteers should plan for about 3–4 hours per month. This includes one quarterly board meeting (1–2 hours) plus additional time (up to ~3 hours) for case consultations or follow-up as needed.

*The role is primarily remote/virtual, with occasional in-person meetings or events in Los Angeles. We value flexibility: you can schedule consultation hours at your convenience during the month.

We are looking for someone who can assist the lead Volunteer Coordinator with organizing food and donation deliveries, greeting volunteers, helping with sign in sheets, and keeping communication clear and positive between all teams. Your role ensures that every volunteer feels supported and every guest receives the care and respect they deserve.
