Volunteer: Use Your Professional Skills to Help Someone Access Life-Changing Benefits

Do you enjoy meeting people and helping them access life-changing support? Are you someone who listens carefully, stays organized, and thrives in a team environment?

Then we need you.

Better Angels is seeking Volunteer Resource Day Intake Specialists to help guests begin the process of determining eligibility for Social Security Disability benefits (SSI/SSDI) during our Resource Days across Los Angeles County.

This role places you at the front line of our events — welcoming guests, listening to their stories, and helping them take an important first step toward financial stability.

Role Overview

As a Resource Day Intake Specialist, you will conduct structured intake conversations with guests attending our Resource Days. Working in pairs, you will guide guests through a short questionnaire designed to determine potential eligibility for Social Security Disability benefits.

Using a standardized digital intake form, you will collect and enter information directly during the event. Each intake team will likely assist 4–6 guests over the course of a four-hour Resource Day, ensuring every interaction is respectful, accurate, and supportive.

This role is ideal for volunteers who enjoy direct service, are comfortable working with structured processes, and value compassionate, human-centered interactions.

Why This Work Matters

For many people experiencing homelessness or severe economic hardship, Social Security Disability benefits can provide critical financial stability.

However, the application process is complex, and many eligible individuals never begin the process because they lack guidance or support.  Our partner, Mindset, is able to represent and support applicants through the review and approval process.

By conducting intake at Resource Days, you help identify neighbors who may qualify for SSI or SSDI and connect them with the next steps toward applying. Your work helps open the door to benefits that can provide long-term stability and improve quality of life.

Every intake conversation represents a potential pathway toward greater security.

What is a Resource Day? Resource Days are welcoming community events where guests can access warm meals, live music, clothing giveaways, hygiene kits, charging stations, and services from local nonprofits and government partners - all in one place, designed around dignity, connection, and practical support.

Key Responsibilities

Welcome guests and explain the purpose of the intake process

Conduct structured intake interviews using a standardized digital questionnaire

Accurately enter guest information into the intake form during the event

Work collaboratively with another volunteer as part of a two-person intake team

Listen carefully and communicate with empathy and respect

Ensure guest information is handled with professionalism and confidentiality

Coordinate with the Resource Day team to direct guests to additional services when appropriate

Meet monthly via Zoom with the volunteer team to share experiences and support each other.

Qualifications

Strong interpersonal skills and a friendly, approachable demeanor

Ability to listen carefully and communicate with empathy and respect

Comfortable following structured processes and entering information into digital forms

Reliable, organized, and able to work effectively in a team setting

Interest in helping individuals navigate access to benefits and services

Bilingual volunteers, particularly Spanish speakers, are highly encouraged to apply.

Prior experience with intake processes, social services, or benefits programs is helpful but not required.

Adults only, for this role.

Training & Support

Better Angels will provide:

Virtual training before your first Resource Day

On-site orientation and guidance during events

Ongoing support from experienced team members

Our goal is to ensure every volunteer feels confident and prepared.

Time Commitment

Volunteers will serve two to three Resource Days per month, with each event lasting approximately four hours onsite.   See the schedule of our events here.

Resource Days take place across Los Angeles County and are scheduled in advance. Your shift will also be scheduled in advance, and this role is flexible around your needs.
