Every Wednesday, Kingdom Common Grounds at the First United Methodist Church of Reseda provides a hot sit-down meal in a beautifully decorated dining room, warm showers, a full (free) "farmer's market", shopping and styling in a full clothing boutique, free haircuts, free childcare, and children's books.  Partnering with Better Angels, we will invite more local resources for their guests to access at this location.  When we work with fellow volunteers to meet the urgent needs of people living outside, our entire community benefits.

Hope the Mission Navigation Help Center are working on creating a dedicated event to serve their community in need.  At this monthly event, the team invites additional service providers to bring resources for their guests to access at this location as they expand services and operations.

Our partners at the Whittier LGBTQ Center provide showers, laundry, case management, free clothing, and care to the community every Monday-Friday.  And every Thursday, our partner, Operation Healthy Hearts, provides groceries and hygiene supplies.   
But there are more needs in this area, so we invite service providers and vendors to come alongside us to provide a warm, nutritious meal, immediate healthcare, connection to many other benefits and resources!

Los Angeles County faces a deep homelessness crisis. More than 45,000 Angelenos are without homes​ as of 2024. Attorneys on our Legal Advisory Board can help protect vulnerable renters and shape fair housing policies, directly helping individuals avoid eviction and homelessness.

By volunteering your legal expertise, you support innovative solutions (like eviction-prevention loans and tech platforms) that provide a real safety net for people at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness. Your civic leadership and advocacy make a tangible difference: helping Better Angels navigate complex legal challenges means we can serve more people and bring them home.

Volunteer Advisors will provide strategic counsel and guidance for our mission-driven programs.

As a Legal Advisory Board member, you will work with our leadership team to tackle legal and policy issues related to housing and homelessness. Your experience in real estate law, tenant/landlord law, employment law, or nonprofit governance will help shape our strategies.

You’ll collaborate with city and nonprofit partners, Better Angels staff, and fellow volunteers. Together, you’ll integrate legal insight into program design, risk management, and advocacy efforts. This is a hands-on volunteer role where your expertise informs real cases and guides active initiatives.

*Attend and actively participate in one quarterly Legal Advisory Board meeting (typically 1–2 hours, held virtually or in Los Angeles) to review ongoing cases and organizational strategy.

*Provide up to ~3 hours per month of pro bono legal advice and consultation on specific cases, contracts, and policy questions. Recruit or refer qualified volunteers for direct legal support, including reviewing lease or loan documents, advising on tenant rights and eviction prevention, and guiding employment or nonprofit legal issues.

*Review program materials (e.g., eviction-prevention loan agreements, partnership contracts, policy briefs) for legal soundness and compliance. Offer recommendations to ensure our work is legally robust.

*Monitor relevant local, state, and federal laws/regulations affecting our programs. Alert staff to legal risks or changes and advise on proactive strategies to keep clients and operations safe.

*Collaborate closely with Better Angels staff and fellow board members. Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional ethics while contributing a solutions-oriented perspective to advance our mission.

*Licensed attorney in good standing in California ( preferably with several years of practice experience).

*Expertise in one or more of the following areas: real estate law, tenant and landlord law, employment law, or nonprofit/governance law. Experience advising REITs, nonprofits, or working on housing/homelessness issues is a strong plus.
*Demonstrated commitment to social justice, community advocacy, or public interest – for example, prior pro bono work or civic leadership roles. A passion for housing justice and helping underserved communities is essential.

*Excellent analytical and communication skills. You should be able to explain complex legal issues clearly to non-lawyers and work collaboratively with a diverse team.

*Comfort with a primarily remote volunteer role. Flexible scheduling skills and reliability are important, since community members and partners depend on our timely legal guidance.

*Ability to volunteer approximately 3–4 hours per month.

Better Angels is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit founded in 2023 by tech entrepreneurs to tackle the region’s homelessness crisis. Our mission is “to solve LA’s homelessness epidemic by harnessing the power of the entire Los Angeles community”​. We take a bold, holistic, technology-driven approach. In partnership with civic agencies and funders, we build programs and tools across prevention, services, shelter, and housing.

For example, our Short-Term Eviction Prevention (STEP) Fund provides rapid, zero-interest microloans to tenants facing financial emergencies. To date, more than 600 such loans (totaling more than $1.2M) have helped keep families in their homes​

Better Angels also develops digital tools to empower homeless outreach workers,  connect people in crisis with resources (like our recent disaster relief navigator for wildfire victims), or find shelter, and organizes community events to bring services directly to those experiencing homelessness. We collaborate closely with city officials and partner nonprofits to minimize duplication and maximize our impact.

*Volunteers should plan for about 3–4 hours per month. This includes one quarterly board meeting (1–2 hours) plus additional time (up to ~3 hours) for case consultations or follow-up as needed.

*The role is primarily remote/virtual, with occasional in-person meetings or events in Los Angeles. We value flexibility: you can schedule consultation hours at your convenience during the month.

Food on Foot is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that has changed lives since 1996 by providing nutritious meals, housing, life-skills training, and full-time employment opportunities to unhoused and low-income individuals. As a Volunteer Project Manager, you’ll help create spaces where unhoused neighbors feel seen, where volunteers feel purposeful, and where systems of care become more personal. Your leadership ensures that every Resource Day is not just efficient — it’s compassionate, respectful, and deeply human.

As a Volunteer Project Manager, you’ll make sure our monthly Resource Days are smooth, intentional, and impactful for both guests and volunteers. You’ll lead on-the-ground coordination and ensure everyone feels supported, prepared, and valued. Specifically, you’ll:

Help plan and manage logistics for monthly Resource Days in collaboration with Service Pillar staff and site leads

Greet and guide volunteers, assign roles, and support a positive, productive flow throughout the day

Track volunteer participation, gather feedback, and keep the engagement team informed

Collaborate with Tiffany Pegula (Volunteer Engagement Specialist) and other pillar leads to align on goals and volunteer experience

You don’t need formal project management experience, but you do need heart, structure, and leadership instincts. This role is a great fit if you are:

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR ASSISTANT – FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF RESEDA Do you enjoy organizing people, creating order, and helping things run smoothly? Join us as a Haircut Helper at our weekly Resource Day at First United Methodist Church of Reseda. Volunteers will assist our lead hairstylist in providing free haircuts to community members. Tasks include helping with setup, managing the haircut sign-up sheet, sweeping hair between clients, and ensuring a clean and welcoming space. Why this work matters: A simple haircut can restore confidence and dignity for someone experiencing hardship. By lending your time and talent, you’re helping our guests feel seen, cared for, and ready to take on new opportunities. Better Angels is seeking Volunteer Resource Day Intake Specialists to help guests begin the process of determining eligibility for Social Security Disability benefits (SSI/SSDI) during our Resource Days across Los Angeles County.

This role places you at the front line of our events — welcoming guests, listening to their stories, and helping them take an important first step toward financial stability.

As a Resource Day Intake Specialist, you will conduct structured intake conversations with guests attending our Resource Days. Working in pairs, you will guide guests through a short questionnaire designed to determine potential eligibility for Social Security Disability benefits.

Using a standardized digital intake form, you will collect and enter information directly during the event. Each intake team will likely assist 4–6 guests over the course of a four-hour Resource Day, ensuring every interaction is respectful, accurate, and supportive.

This role is ideal for volunteers who enjoy direct service, are comfortable working with structured processes, and value compassionate, human-centered interactions.

For many people experiencing homelessness or severe economic hardship, Social Security Disability benefits can provide critical financial stability.

However, the application process is complex, and many eligible individuals never begin the process because they lack guidance or support.  Our partner, Mindset, is able to represent and support applicants through the review and approval process.  

By conducting intake at Resource Days, you help identify neighbors who may qualify for SSI or SSDI and connect them with the next steps toward applying. Your work helps open the door to benefits that can provide long-term stability and improve quality of life.

Mindset Care supports individuals whose health conditions impact their ability to work in accessing the Social Security benefits they are entitled to, with Disability Benefits (SSI/SSDI) Evaluation, Application Support, and Appeal Representation.

Each individual is evaluated for SSI/SSDI eligibility, and an application can be submitted on their behalf. If a claim needs to be appealed, Mindset Care has attorneys on staff who can represent individuals through the appeals process.

A person may begin working with Mindset Care at any point in their SSI/SSDI journey.

Importantly, there are no out-of-pocket costs for these services. Mindset Care is only paid directly by the Social Security Administration if the individual is awarded benefits.

As a Resource Day Intake Specialist for Safe Parking LA, you will conduct structured intake conversations with guests currently living in their vehicles.

Working in pairs, you will guide guests through a standardized digital questionnaire to determine eligibility for Safe Parking LA. During the conversation, you will also help review required vehicle documentation such as driver’s license, registration, and insurance status.

Volunteers enter information directly into a structured intake form during the event. Each intake team typically assists 4–6 guests during a four-hour Resource Day.

Guests who qualify may receive same-day enrollment, including a parking permit for an available Safe Parking LA site, leading to an immediate connection to a case manager and additional supportive resources.

This role is ideal for volunteers who enjoy direct service, are comfortable following structured processes, and value respectful, human-centered interactions.

Thousands of people in Los Angeles sleep in their vehicles each night because they have nowhere else to go.

Safe Parking LA provides secure overnight parking locations where individuals and families can safely sleep in their vehicles, while also connecting participants to services that help them stabilize and work toward permanent housing.

Safe Parking LA operates a safe parking program, providing secure overnight parking locations for people living in their vehicles. These locations are staffed with a security guard and have access to water and toilets.

The program offers individuals and families a safe place to stay while they work toward stability and permanent housing. Participants also receive access to case management and supportive services that help address barriers such as housing access, employment, and financial challenges.

Safe Parking LA focuses not just on providing parking, but on creating a pathway toward housing and long-term stability.

We are recruiting up to eight Volunteer Outreach Marketing Leads to own an outreach strategy and execution for defined Los Angeles County areas.

Each Lead will direct a volunteer team in marketing to guests, volunteers, and community stakeholders, for one or more specific neighborhoods with recurring monthly Resource Days and community events.

This is a leadership role — not just participation.

As a Volunteer Outreach Marketing Lead, you will own outreach performance within your assigned geography. You’ll design a hyper-local engagement strategy, lead a team of volunteers, and ensure our Resource Days are visible, accessible, and well-attended.

You will work closely with the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator to recruit and engage your outreach team. You are not building from scratch — you are leading and mobilizing talent.

Your primary “customer” for this project is the Senior Operations Manager, who oversees all logistics and leads for Resource Days. Your outreach success directly supports strong event turnout, volunteer engagement, and smooth on-the-ground execution.

You will also work under the guidance of an experienced Director of Marketing, gaining hands-on leadership experience in field marketing, community growth strategy, and nonprofit scale.

This is a fun, fast-moving opportunity to collaborate with a highly capable team tackling the biggest issue facing Los Angeles County.
